What is it like to be a commercial pilot?
Q. I have always loved aviation, and I already know more about it than the average person. I have thought about becoming a commercial pilot, but I really don't know all that much about the job requirements and the lifestyle of a commercial pilot What does it take to be a good commercial pilot? How long do you have to go to school? Is it true that the military is the best way to go for the job? What is the lifestyle like, are you always away from home?

A. What does it take to be a good commercial pilot? - The best pilots I've flow with have a level head, modest egos, a willingness to learn and a general thirst for knowledge. Is it true that the military is the best way to go for the job? - I have no military experience personally. The only input I have on this matter is by judging the military pilots with whom I have flown. To make a long story short, no. I don't feel that military is the best way to go. It's certainly not a bad way to go, but don't feel like that's how you have to go in order to work as a commercial pilot. What is the lifestyle like, are you always away from home? - I am away from home an average of 2 to 3 nights a week. This is somewhat typical, at least at my stage… [cont.]

Where can a Commercial Pilot with < 300 hrs get a job?
Q. If you have a Commercial Multi-Engine Instrument License, less than 300 hours and don't want to be an Instructor where do you get a job flying so you can build time to get hired with the Regionals that want 1000 hours? I am familiar with the required hours of the different regionals. But do they actually hire low hour pilots? And what are the options other than regionals? Has anyone recently got a job at a regional with under 300 hours or anyone know anyone that has? It's my understanding that cargo is single pilot part 135 operations. And you can't fly PIC 135 withour 1250 hours. What cargo companies are flying F.O.'s???

Where can a Commercial Pilot with < 300 hrs get a job? *Skydive pilot *Banner tow pilot *Traffic watch pilot *Pipeline patrol *Fish spotting I didn't want to get a CFI either, so I became a sky dive pilot. It was awesome fun. (Check out and go to to find your nearest drop zone). Once I had about 700TT I also began to ferry planes across the USA. These jobs are the most common for low time pilots who don't want to instruct however some operators may require substantially more TT to meet their insurance minimums. Here are more ideas- Shoot for getting 500TT. That should get you an interview these days. However, if you have your commercial, ME instrument already you can apply with Pinnacle Airlines & PSA as both only require that… [cont.]

PAL has an aviation school open to all college graduates. assuming you've met their standards and requirements, i don't know exactly the specifics of their training costs such as payment methods, but it's around 1.4 million pesos total until you get a commercial pilot's license... it could be 2 years, it could be 3. depends on the visual flight rules phase of the training where the rainy season will cause a delay. the training doesn't guarantee an instant slot at PAL's flight operations roster as some lucky cadets would be hired as second officers immediately after the training. for everyone else, they need to build up 500 hours of flying time and the fastest way to do that is to become a flight instructor after completing the training. … [cont.]
